The purpose of this book is to provide information and advice to teachers, coaches, parents and general readers who wish to improve the fitness and health of young children and adolescents. Over the years, there have been various texts covering the essential principles of athletics. Surprisingly, there are few if any dedicated texts on athletics. Given the emphasis on this sector of the playing population the need to fill this gap in the literature is important. A possible aid to the solution of this problem is the compilation of a volume, which endeavors to explain to the ordinary reader terms which are new to him and which have not yet become part of his general vocabulary.
This volume, attempts to cover broadly the whole realm of athletics. It contains sections covering the History, the Major Competitions, the Great Players, Rules and Regulations, different tactics and techniques, statistics, etc. This book features an enormous amount of information about athletics throughout the world. This book also includes biographies of greatest players of the past and today’s best players. It also covers common injuries which athletes unfortunately sometimes suffer in the course of normal sporting activities. While this contains some material that is technical and is presented from a medical perspective, we feel that if the injuries and their treatments were described in any less detail, valuable information would be lost. We hope that the explanations and advice we have included may help in promoting a rapid recovery to full health should an athlete become injured. We review the methods for improving speed, endurance and flexibility. These components of fitness, coupled with strength development, are potential areas where athlete may be expected. This book starts with the most basic of basics and explains the how’s and whys of athletics at a pace where even the most ignorant can soon know as much about the sport as any professional.

Baseball is a team sport in which a fist-sized ball is thrown and hit with a bat. Scoring involves running and touching markers on the ground called bases. The ball itself is called a baseball. Baseball is sometimes called hardball to differentiate it from the closely related sport of softball and other similar games.
Baseball is popular in the Americas and East Asia. In Japan, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama, South Korea, Taiwan and some other countries, it is the most popular sport by any measurement. In the United States, baseball has often been called the national pastime, and the total attendance for Major League games is more than that of all other American professional team sports combined. Among American television viewers, however, it has been surpassed in popularity by American football and car racing. Although the three most popular team sports in North America are ball games (baseball, basketball and American football), baseball’s popularity was once so great that the word “ballgame” in the United States specifically refers to a game of baseball, and “ballfield” to a baseball field.

Basketball is a sport in which two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop (the basket) under organized rules. Since its invention in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891, it has developed to become a truly international sport. Organized league play originated in the YMCA; early leagues were formed in colleges. Basketball eventually became a professional sport. Even though it was originally an American sport, it quickly spread internationally and outstanding players and teams are found today all over the world. Like the information above, the average reader is deluged continually with a quantity of facts in this field. A possible aid to the solution of this problem is the compilation of a volume, which endeavors to explain to the ordinary reader terms which are new to him and which have not yet become part of his general vocabulary. Boxing, nicknamed the “sweet science” and also called pugilism or prizefighting, is a sport where two participants of similar weight attack each other with their fists in a series of one to three-minute intervals called “rounds”. In both Amateur and Professional divisions, the combatants (called boxers or fighters) avoid their opponent’s punches whilst trying to land punches of their own. Points are awarded for clean, solid blows to the legal area on the front of the opponent’s body above the waistline, with hits to the head and torso especially valuable. The fighter with the most points after the scheduled number of rounds is declared the winner. Victory may also be achieved if the opponent is knocked down and unable get up before the referee counts to ten (a Knockout, or KO) or if the opponent is deemed too injured to continue (a Technical Knockout, or TKO).

Unlike most other sports, lawn tennis has precise origins. An Englishman, Major Walter C. Wingfield, invented lawn tennis (1873) and first played it at a garden party in Wales. Called “Sphairistiké” [Gr.,=ball playing] by its inventor, the early game was played on an hourglass-shaped court, widest at the baselines and narrowest at the net. In creating the new sport, Wingfield borrowed heavily from the older games of court tennis and squash racquets and probably even from the Indian game of badminton.
Court tennis is also known as royal tennis. It originated in France during the Middle Ages and became a favorite of British royalty, including Henry VIII. The progression from court tennis, which used an unresilient sheepskin ball filled with sawdust, sand, or wool, to lawn tennis depended upon invention of a ball that would bounce.

Common man, professional people, children, or others, are all interested in sports. Either sports are seen as trivial and insignificant, or they are looked upon with curiosity and attention. People often read the sports pages of a newspaper and watch sporting events on television without ever thinking about their interest. They just enjoy the experience. Millions of people, from every country, of nearly every age, of every ideology, love sports. Sports, games, and play have figured prominently in all cultures.
This book has at its core, biographies of great sportsmen and descriptions of the sports with which they are associated. The same theme is repeated over and over again. In choosing the personalities and the sports to include, we aimed for diversity. Each entry contains a succinct but careful evaluation of a subject’s career and contributions, as well as an up-todate bibliography. There is some variation in the length of each, depending, in large part, on a subject’s accomplishments, the complexity of his or her professional commitments, interest in the individual’s life and accomplishments as reflected in what has been published about him or her, and the extent to which the available information about the individual has been accessible.
