The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states that support each other and work together towards international goals. Most of these countries are former British colonies, or dependencies of these colonies. The literature of these countries is collectively known as the commonwealth literature.
The phenomenon of Commonwealth literature is of quite recent growth—roughly contemporary with the at-tainment of sovereignty by former British colonies. It is not surprising, therefore, that almost nothing has been written about the subject, although the books of Commonwealth authors have been published in Britain and other commonwealth countries.
Some of the commonwealth countries have a very rich tradition of literature. Most notably are the countries like India, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka etc. This book describes the literature of some of these prominent countries.
There is even an association for promoting the literature of commonwealth countries. This is known as the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies or ACLALS. It was started in 1964 with a conference at the University of Leeds and was officially accredited to The Commonwealth in 2005.
The objectives of ACLALS are to promote and coordinate Commonwealth Literature Studies, organize seminars and workshops, arrange lectures by writers and scholars, publish a newsletter about activities in the field of Commonwealth Literature and hold one conference triennially.

This volume is neither a dictionary nor a glossary, it is an encyclopaedia. The reader will find a complete exposition of all the concepts which are currently in use in English literature. In our view this encyclopaedia should help reader with the means of assessing the importance of the tradition in English literature.
For some time there has existed a widespread consciousness of the need for the interpretation of the literature terms to the layman. The average reader is deluged continually with a quantity of facts in the field that we call English literature. A possible aid to the solution of this problem is the compilation of a volume, which endeavors to explain to the ordinary reader terms which are new to him and which have not yet become part of his general vocabulary. Existing contributions of the kind are limited in scope to some such field as English literature.
This volume attempts in brief compass to cover broadly the whole realm of English literature. The aim of this volume is to fill the need for definitions of many new terms that have come into usage during recent years and also to include many of the old terms that are used in current English literature. When a concept or process can be expressed precisely in ordinary language it appears unnecessary, and indeed detrimental to the growth of that field, to coin a new term. It is worth while to make English literature intelligible to as wide a field of readers as possible.

The novel in India is conventionally thought to have emerged in the middle of the nineteenth century. The year of the Rebellion, 1857, also saw the publication of Alaler Gharer Dulal , upon which Bankimcandra Chatterji, who himself holds a lofty place in the development of the novel in India, lavished praise as a "beautifully written" work. The contemporary assessment of the merits of this work has been more restrained, but nonetheless Alaler Gharer Dulal is thought to occupy a unique position in the history of Indian, and certainly Bengali, literature as "the first work in Bengali which can be described as a novel." As in England, where the rise of the novel is associated with the industrial revolution and emergence of a new sensibility, so in India the novel's beginnings are said to be linked to the penetration of the market economy into the countryside, the emergence of a middle class, and the advent of other forces of 'modernization' and 'Westernization'.

Literary criticism is the study, discussion, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. Modern literary criticism is often informed by literary theory, which is the philosophical discussion of its methods and goals. Though the two activities are closely related, literary critics are not always, and have not always been, theorists.
Whether or not literary criticism should be considered a separate field of inquiry from literary theory, or conversely from book reviewing, is a matter of some controversy. For example, the Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory and Criticism draws no distinction between literary theory and literary criticism, and almost always uses them together to describe the same concept. Some critics consider literary criticism a practical application of literary theory, as criticism always deals directly with a literary work, albeit from a theoretical point of view.
Modern literary criticism is often published in essay or book form. Academic literary critics teach in literature departments and publish in academic journals, and more popular critics publish their criticism in broadly circulating periodicals such as the New York Times Book Review, the New York Review of Books, the London Review of Books, The Nation, and The New Yorker.

Drama is an ancient version of performing art. In fact, this universe, our planet earth, lives on it, in general and human life in particular is a drama itself. This world is a stage, where everyone has to act or play a particular role. Perhaps, the very concept of drama emerged from this conception.
In general sense, the term 'Drama' refers to any work which is meant to be performed on a stage by actors. A more particular meaning is a serious play; not necessarily tragedy. Drama is an ancient and popular literary genre. While a play refers to a dramatic work which is designed to be presented on a stage (or in a television studio) and performed by actors and actresses (i.e. dramatis personnae).
The present work, in four volumes, contains vital information on all the great dramatists. All leading dramatists/ playwrights, representing past and present, from the entire globe find place in this monumental work.
Alphabetically arranged by name, their biographical sketch, theories propounded, works authored, critiques and other significant achievements are explained elaborately. In fact all the vital information is gathered from various authoritative sources e.g. books, journals, magazines, reports, monographs etc. As such the real credit of this ought go to the original contributors.

The book contains chapters discussing the place of writing among the various systems of human intercommunication, chapters devoting to the descriptive and comparative treatment of the various types of writing in the world, chapter dealing with the evolution of writing from the earliest stages of picture writing to a full alphabet, and chapters dealing with general problems, such as the future of writing and the relationship of writing to speech, art, and religion.
Let it be clearly understood from the start that the work here presented is not a comprehensive history of writing. This work is concerned only with those writings that are representative of certain types or are crucial for the understanding of certain developments. One would look in vain, therefore, in this study for a discussion of Latin writing through ancient, medieval, and modern times, because that system represents nothing new and important for the theory of writing.

Right from my teaching career days I was interested in pursuing some creative work and my study of Nergis Dalal’s fiction and her other journalistic writings and subsequent research on her, gave me a unique opportunity to fulfill my desire.
Indian writing in English, especially fiction, is gaining ground by leaps and bounds. Yet Indian English literary scene bristles with amazing anamolies and curious contradictions. Some writers like Mulkraj Anand, R.K. Narayan, Raja Rao and others have been given – excessive critical attention, while many others especially women writers have been neglected.
Nergis Dalal is one such writer, who can be said to have suffered unjust critical neglect. Even well-known scholars have not analysed her fiction properly. Though she has not been able to rise to the stature of Anita Desai or Kamala Markandaya, she is a versatile genius whose creative writing is not limited to the field of fiction alone.

Many English tests based on Western culture are inappropriate for regions where English use differs from that of Europe and North America. In these non-Western settings, it is desirable that English assessments be based on real-world English use. Therefore, identifying tasks of non-Western English language use is a beginning step in developing culturally appropriate English language tests.
The book identifies significant areas of interplay between technology and applied linguistics, and it explores current perspectives on perennial questions such as how theory and research on second language acquisition can help to inform technology-based language learning practices, how the multifaceted learning accomplished through technology can be evaluated, and how theoretical perspectives can offer insight on data obtained from research on interaction with and through technology.
This cross-cultural sociolinguistic is part of a larger issues involving semi-structured interviews with English teachers. In this, three task descriptions of non-Western English language use are identified, categorized by domain, setting, and language skill. This book will be very indispensable for the students preparing to go abroad for further study.

I have attempted to put this investigation in as straightforward and simple a fashion as possible. Except in the introductory remarks the same implicitness remains the case with the giants of the phenomenological tradition.
Moreover, I have also chosen to describe things autobiographically to make the narrative even more straightforward. Because of this I run the risk that the book may be taken as merely autobiographical when its presumption is at least a bit more pretentious. It is intended as a prolegomena to an ontology of listening with suggestions for the implications of a philosophy of sound.
And, in fact, while the style of the illustrations here is autobiographical, the investigations themselves took place over seven years and involved classroom investigation and much inter-subjective research. In some instances studies in empirical psychology also suggested inquiry in a more phenomenological vein.
Thus the danger of taking the studies as being mere assertions should be avoided. They should be taken as exercises in the application of a stricter phenomenological use of variations which have in every instance been crosschecked with other persons' experiences.

In the preparation of the book, I have emphasized the developmental aspects of reading instruction. Accordingly, consideration is given to the characteristics of child development, the contributions of linguistic studies to the teaching of reading, the effects of improvement in reading on achievement in other curriculum areas, the influence of community forces on reading habits, the importance of motivation and interest as factors in the promotion of effective reading performance, the categories of reading skills and the pupils' command thereof, the use of auditory and visual materials in reading instruction, and the maintenance of an unwavering continuity in the attainment of desirable levels of reading development.
Analyses of characteristic features of developmental aims in the management of formulated programmes, emphasize the importance of a sequential concept of human development in programs contributing to the recognized advancement of the "outcomes of learning" manifested in the development of children and youth in their progress from preschool to graduation from college.

For improving English effectiveness in developing students' higher cognitive capacities, there is increased interest of school districts, colleges, and universities in identifying ways to help their students build the cognitive skills that enable them to learn and think effectively. What can be done, they ask, beyond teaching the fundamentals of reading, writing, arithmetic", and subject-matter knowledge, to enable students to use their skills and knowledge for effective problem solving, reasoning, and comprehension?
This confluence of renewed educational interest and modern scientific investigation offers a challenging opportunity to attack the problem of "passive knowledge" — knowledge that students receive and express, but cannot use effectively for thinking and learning. Schools have not been well enough equipped for this task.
Older theories of learning focused on simpler forms of learning and did not provide understanding of higher cognitive processes. Educational practices based on those theories resulted in improved instruction for fundamental skills; less emphasis was given to exercising thinking and problem-solving abilities in the course of schooling.

Speech is an exceedingly complex human activity, and it took a great deal of scientific exploration, experimentation, development, as well as considerable computational power to deal successfully with speech. Moreover, the challenge hasn’t been fully met yet. Change the way you pronounce your commands ever so subtly.
Or put even good computer speech and human speech side by side, and most listeners will still show a clear preference for human speech. As a result, the race is on to improve computer speech interfaces, a race that has recently been joined by some of the world’s major computer firms. It can be expected that over the next ten years, major efforts will be launched to create competing products, and to improve on existing software.
Moreover, the world is a multilingual place, and at least the synthesis side of speech will have a distinctly international flavour. The recognition side may initially be handled in language-independent fashion, but in the long run, even in this area, “one size may not fit all”. Increasingly, the aim will be to create and understand natural, error-free and truly pronounce speech.

My research experience has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life as it has helped me to grow as an individual. The present study has enlightened me as well as broadened my vision and I could identify myself with the women characters of Audrey Thomas’s novels, feel their anguish and pain, and have got a lot of strength from them. The present study has also helped me to grow as a woman and rediscover myself.
Feminism fights against everything that discriminates between masculine and feminine and aims at placing women at their rightful position. Feminism is a movement for growth, through equal rights and opportunities. Its aim is to relieve women from the tyranny of ignorance, isolation, and vulnerability and involve them in larger problems of society as a whole.
Canada has produced a predominant number of women writers. Canadian women writers articulate in their fiction the silence and marginality of women which caused a sort of cultural alienation of women. The focus in their works is to reveal the experiences of woman from within, of the woman alone, of the woman with a man or another woman, and the projection of man through woman’s eyes, and also the projection of the woman as mother/daughter/wife.

The second language acquisition education has traditionally consisted of three independent professions: foreign language education, English as a second language (ESL), and bilingual education.
The independent development of these three fields is due to a number of socio-historical factors, including: (1) the traditionally elite status of foreign language study, (2) the impact of second language acquisition (SLA) research on the emerging ESL profession in the latter half of this century, and (3) the evolution of a language rights ideology and subsequent resurgence and development of bilingual education during the 1970s and 1980s.
Foreign language courses are popular electives in many secondary (and even primary) schools serving middle and upper class populations. In addition, foreign language study for one to two years is often required at any state and private universities. With increased globalization and the corresponding need for fluency in languages other than English for business and diplomacy this book discusses in depth of the matter.
This compartmentalization of second language studies into separate areas of research and programme development, however, has consequently resulted in less than satisfactory progress for students across sociocultural/linguistic backgrounds. To adequately address student problems and goals, an understanding is needed of the potential for building relationships between foreign language teaching and language minority education.

This book "Sociolinguistics" is about the language that used to be called Sociolinguistics. Although all speakers of a language themselves admit the existence of the common core, they fail to agree on a name for it.
The aim of this book is to describe both the common core and the individual languages.
The book consists of the Grammar, contains a full and systematic description of the grammar; embedded within this description are statements identifying the specific points.
And the Sociolinguistic Commentary, provides the social, political and historical background to this complex situation, and discusses in some detail the question of "one" vs. "more than one" as it pertains to language.
The book's underlying goal is to show that all of these languages -are real and existing systems, and that to admit the existence of any one of them does not deny the existence of any of the others. Hope the book helps in understanding the basics in depth to all the readers.

A world without books is hard to imagine. From childhood onwards man is greatly influenced by books. Blessed are the men who can pen down their thoughts. Shakespeare, Dryden, Pope, Vikram Seth and so many more, all of these has influenced us in one way or another. This book is dedicated to these man and women.
It was not easy to decide whom to include in our volume. We have tried to span the breadth of civilizations to identify writers from various cultures and perspectives who influenced the shape of our present world. We have left out some individuals, but we hope the reader will forgive such omissions. We have tried to be as accurate as possible, but some mistakes are sure to come in. The entries are arranged alphabetically. Each entry contains a brief biography and a concise, detailed discussion of the author’s major works and themes.
In preparation of this book, the author has freely consulted large number of books and journals so no authenticity is claimed. Author is especially thankful to Anmol Publications Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi for shaping this book in its final form. Suggestions for further improvement of this book are not only welcome but also greatly appreciated.
