Author: U N Asian Development Institute, Bangkok
Publisher: Abhinav Publications
Price: US $ 1.25
Discount: 30.00 %
In view of increasing attempts by countries towards coordinating population planning with development planning a need has arisen not only to integrate efforts of population control into a consistent framework of population planning but relating the objectives and targets of population planning with targets of production sector development and human resource development. The success of such attempts vitally depends on a popular appreciation of the ideas involved in such coordination work. With a view to meeting this requirement, some selected terms in demography are described in this volume, the criterion of selection being the frequency of their use in demographic discussions of population planning. The volume will be of use and interest to middle and senior level officials concerned with population planning and students in colleges and universities studying related subjects.

The book analyses in a lucid manner the concept of work and its relationship with religions. It also provides Indian managers with ethical guidelines for decision-making, motivation and leadership. Besides this, the book is likely to provide enough challenge to managers to follow a style of leadership that blends with the social and cultural milieu of our country. Encyclopaedia of Behavioural Science, Volume 1
Author: P.C. Sinha
Publisher: Anmol Publications
Price: N/A
Discount: N/A
This publication titled “International Encyclopedia of Behavioral Science” deals with the subject areas of behavioral science in its totality. The publication is purposely made user-friendly, so that it truly serves the purpose of becoming a reference book. In general, behavioral science studies human beings through examination of their behavior in a broad sense, putting emphasis on the process of behavior rather than its products. In this process, the primary task of philosophy is to open a new field for each science to explore by discerning structures in the unmapped areas of our thinking. We need to combine the traditional concerns of philosophy with various issues raised by the rapid progress of modern technology. Psychology, herein, becomes the scientific study of human and animal behavior, as well as those biological and mental processes that underlie behavior. We also study information from such diverse angles as biology and logic. Other areas of significance include experimental psychology, and personality and social psychology. For scientific understanding of the human mind and behavior, its orientation in both should be thoroughly empirical and quantitative; i.e., research and education should be centered on experiments and surveys, and theoretical analysis and interpretation of the data. Many claim that, in principle, psychology is restricted to establishing weak equivalence. Weak equivalence is equivalence with respect to input/output behaviour. Therefore, measuring behavioural data is unable to establish equivalence at the level of functional architecture. Behavioural studies are indeterminate with respect to strong equivalence. This issue is of importance to cognitive psychology because, if true, it implies that cognitive psychology cannot generate insight into cognition without importing knowledge based on non-behavioural observations from other disciplines.

The Encyclopedia of Economics makes the vocabulary of economics accessible to everyone, it supplies you with everything you need to acquire a solid working knowledge of these and more than 2,200 other economics-related terms, including: Accessible, easy to use, and practical, the Encyclopedia of Economics is the first encyclopedia of its kind you don’t need a degree in economics to use. Definitions of more than 2,200 essential economics terms in clearly, simply, and with a minimum of technical jargon and economic theory is given. This encyclopedia is written especially for businesspeople and general readers who want to keep abreast of the latest economic trends. It’s packed with practical examples and applications drawn from the worlds of business, finance, and politics, and it provides detailed definitions of all important new terms as well as traditional economics terminology and everyone’s favorite, slang. The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide teachers, students and laymen interested in economics with clear, concise, and correct definitions and descriptions of the economics terms, throughout. In the volume all the branches are represented. The great field that must be compressed within the limits of a small volume makes omissions inevitable. I trust that the present volume will serve as reliably as the chronometer of today, in the time-pattern of the economics world. The explanations of entries range from brief definitions of a few lines to expository discussions of various lengths. Several goals motivated the treatment. The encyclopedia is to satisfy the immediate technical needs of the user. Economics is to be presented as a unified, ever-growing, and stimulating body of knowledge. The reader who is a non specialist in economics is to be served in economics and in related fields (that are significant for the future). In terms of its broader objectives, the present book may be viewed as an outline or compendium of economics ideas correlated with a large collection of specialized items. There are concern and activity in the educational field with regard to revitalizing and modernizing scientific training and creating a better understanding of this field; it is hoped that this volume will contribute to these aims in economics.

Encyclopaedia of World Economic Crisis, Volume 1
Author: Dr. Ashwani Mahajan
Publisher: Anmol Publications
Price: N/A
Discount: N/A
In 2008, a recession throughout the industrialized world was suggested by several important indicators of economic downturn. Contributors to this downturn included high oil prices, high food prices and a substantial credit crisis leading to the bankruptcy of large and well established investment banks as well as commercial banks in many nations around the world. It was argued that huge increases in commodity prices came as a consequence of extended period of easily available credit and the primary cause of the downturn was exceptionally financial. This crisis has led to increased unemployment, and other signs of contemporaneous economic downturns in major economies of the world. In December 2008, the NBER declared that the United States had been in recession since December 2007, and several economists expressed their concern that there is no end in sight for the downturn. The recession could be the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The decade of the 2000s saw a global explosion in prices, especially focused in commodities and housing. The commodities boom, in which the prices of primary commodities rose again after the late-twentieth century commodities recession of 1980-2000. But in 2008, the prices of many commodities, notably oil and food, got so high to cause genuine economic damage, threatening stagflation and a reversal of globalization. In January 2008, oil prices surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time, the first of many price milestones to be passed in the course of the year. In July, oil peaked at $147.30 a barrel and a gallon of gasoline was more than $4 across most of the U.S.A. These high prices caused a dramatic drop in demand and prices fell below $35 a barrel at the end of 2008. The food and fuel crises were both discussed at the 34th G8 summit in July. Many libertarians, including Congressman and former 2008 Presidential candidate Ron Paul and Peter Schiff in his book Crash Proof, predicted the crisis prior to its occurrence. They are critical of theories that the free market caused the crisis and instead argue that expansionary monetary policy and the Community Reinvestment Act are the primary causes of the crisis. However Alan Greenspan himself has conceded he was partially wrong to oppose regulation of the markets, and expressed “shocked disbelief” at the failure of the self interest of the markets.

India's Population - Aspects of Quality & Control (Vol. II)
Author: Asok Mitra
Publisher: Abhinav Publications
Price: US $ 3.13
Discount: 30.00 %
There is enough justification for the assumption that while the family planning programme must be quickened in pace, other nationwide synergistic social and economic programmes must be intensified simultaneously to obtain greater mileage out of the programmes of population control. Without such concurrent, supportive measures the success of population control as a one-shot measure, operated however vigorously over a short span of time is very likely severely to backfire, as indeed it did in the beginning of 1977. Measures to improve the quality of population to the point where the support for tight control measures could be easily generated, are inexpensive and possible at the present level of India's economic development, provided the ground is cleared for greater public involvement in the welfare and economic programmes through greater vertical decentralisation and horizontal spread. The country would never scrape up the financial and other resources to achieve all these targets within the foreseeable future if the programmes continued to be based on standard governmental norms of expenditure, outfit and per capita performance, but could possibly overfulfil the targets if the right type of motivational and organisational effort is mounted to build up on the social deployment of surpluses of human energy and enterprise for community needs.

Indirect Tax Reforms Challenge and Response
Author: V.K. Krishnan
Publisher: Abhinav Publications
Price: US $ 8.75
Discount: 30.00 %
The book seeks to examine the reforms in three individual segments of Indirect TaxationóCentral Excise, Customs and Service Tax. These together constitute 60% of the total tax revenues in the country. While the three taxes are all indirect taxes, the dynamics of reform in each of these individual segments has been different. The book seeks to examine the tax reforms in each. These reforms have influenced the fortunes of a large number of manufacturing sectors. However, in respect of two Petroleum and Textilesóthe influence has been significant. In two separate chapters, the past impact, the present changes and the future course of action have been outlined. The book also has separate chapters on Central VAT and the proposed State VAT. The book is structurally divided into two parts. Part I deals with the past and present reform measures, while Part II examines the future course of indirect tax reforms. The book argues that tax reform is a ìWork-in-Progressî. Expansion of the tax base is an important theme in all the chapters. One immediate fallout of the tax reform in India has been the declining tax to GDP ratio, but this may improve with policy initiatives to widen the tax base especially in the area of Service Tax, phasing away of indirect tax exemptions and nationwide implementation of State VAT. The book also looks at the indirect tax administration. Design of a modern tax administration is extremely important to make the tax administration more assessee friendly and revenue efficient. By laying out a road map for the future, the book offers useful suggestions for indirect tax reforms to the policy makers..

People’s Empowerment - Challenges of Globalisation

These days, nearly everyone knows about "empowerment." The idea of getting improved business results by empowering people isn't novel, or even controversial, anymore. And why should it be? There are lots of examples of successful companies and improvement programs that would have only worked with an empowered workforce. People Empowerment is one of the best ways to involve employees in any improvement program. To be successful, a People Empowerment process must recognize, congratulate, and reward employees for their commitment to a "problem solving and corrective action" way of doing business. However, too often many companies are very unsuccessful in implementing a People Empowerment program. Why? A variety of reasons: Everyone "thinks" they know about People Empowerment. However, do they truly understand the definition of People Empowerment and the subsequent actions required to implement it? Very simply, People Empowerment is the delegation of authority, accountability, and responsibility to employees for improving the business processes under their control without obtaining permission from management. Without internalizing this definition, empowerment is bound to fail. Sometimes management really doesn't understand what it is getting into when starting the program. Then, they can't operate without a "command & control" structure. People are hindered or prevented from doing anything without getting permission or asking a higher authority.

Socio-Economic Life of Northern India
Author: Sukla Das
Publisher: Abhinav Publications
Price: US $ 2.37
Discount: 30.00 %
This study spotlights the socio-economic life of Northern India during a period somewhat overshadowed by the brilliance of the Gupta era. The fifteen chapters of the text offer a fair glimpse into some interesting facets of contemporary social and economic life. On the one hand they laboriously trace the continuity as well as changes in the socio-economic forces, while on the other they highlight the emergence of new forces with necessary adjustments and modifications consequent on the altered political scene. This survey not only underlines the strength and stability of the two basic forces, social and economic, but further belies the common impression that ancient India focused her emphasis on spiritualism in preference to mundane attainments. If at all, India’s spiritualism only represented the peak of cultural and aesthetic refinements as an outcome of phenomenal material progress rather than the negation of it.

Teaching is a noble profession. It involves honour, prestige, knowledge-updated information, money and much more. From primary to higher education, a teacher is looked upon as an ideal for students. Students make all efforts to imitate their teacher in every respect. As for knowledge, students regard teachers as a moving store-house of information and erudition, where every question has an answer. A teacher (mostly upto 10+2 levels) has to perform a number of duties other than teaching. That’s why he or she finds little time to prepare ‘lesson plans’ and other material to be taught in classroom. While taking a class, the teacher should seem to be moving in the etherial realm of knowledge. He or she should be well prepared and there should not be even the slightest hint of hesitation or lack of confidence. For this purpose, a thorough preparation is necessary. However, extra-curricular activities do not allow a teacher to make sufficient preparation for classroom teaching.
